Taken from my “Real Moms of West Michigan” segment with Tommy and Brook on Star 105.7…
Of course a full belly and warm bed are important but aside from their physical needs, they desperately need us to give them a couple of things that help them thrive.
1. Approval
They want to be affirmed for who they are. They need to know that we approve of who they are as a person, and that we recognize that they were purposely created with a unique personality. Our kids need to know that they are fundamentally worthy of being loved. When we show our child their worth, we show them approval.
It’s important to pay attention to the qualities about your child that makes them unique and highlight them, especially the ones that are character building such as friendship, leadership, communications skills and sharing.
2. Boundaries
If you live on a busy road and you fence in your dog, that’s not punishment, that’s safe boundaries. How much more do our kids need that?! They feel safer in this world if they have boundaries in their lives. Boundaries for what they eat, bedtimes, friends that we allow in their life, behavior expectations. When parents stay in charge, the family is safer and it’s a happier home.
Moms, give your kids the 2 things they so desperately need from us: Approval and boundaries!
Real moms care enough to build healthy happy kids.
