Loving Our Kids The Way They Need Us To

Did you know that every child has a primary language of love? In other words there are certain ways that they will best understand a parent’s love.

I’m reading a book that teaches the 5 basic love languages that all kids (and adults) have and it’s really helping me understand what makes my kids tick.

If we want to raise these kiddos to be emotionally healthy adults, a foundation built on love is so very important!

The five basic love languages that the book talks about are (click on the links to hear the segments):

  1. Physical touch

  2. Words of affirmation

  3. Quality time

  4. Gifts

  5. Acts of service

In the weeks ahead I’ll be focusing on specific love languages that our kids might have but today I just want to give moms a couple clues to look for, that will help you discover what those are for your kids.

  1. First, pay attention to how your kids show you love because our kids are likely to express love the way they want to receive it. Are your little ones giving you lots of compliments or saying “I love you” often, this could indicate that they want words of affirmation from you.

  2. And then pay attention to how they are showing others that they care about them. Does your child love giving gifts to their teacher or do they like to give toys away to their friends? This might be a clue that they thrive on “receiving gifts.”

So moms, kids need all 5 of these love languages, but will most likely respond best to one over the others, so we’re going to learn about all 5 and do some detective work to figure out which one each of our kids respond to the best.

Real moms really love their kids and we just want to do the best we can at raising them to be healthy adults and this is a great tool to have in our mom belt to do that! Tune in to Star 105.7  the next few weeks for more tips and info on loving our kids the way they need us to!
